Stations - a photography book

Travel. The thought of it fills you with excitement, you go somewhere with someone, experience things. But there is another kind of travel. With this body of work, I set out to illustrate the monotony and loneliness of commuting in strong juxtaposition to the joy normally associated with travel. The images in the book are centered around the places where so many pass by but almost nobody meets.

Print: The Old Rope

I am unable to fully express what it is about an old moldy rope and an even older mossy bridge that captures one’s emotions. But they do. Ageing things have character, there is history in them. Even an old rope, tied thousands of times with a questionable know to secure a boat. And the old wooden pontoon - how many fishermen have walked on it an hour before sunrise to load their nets and head out from the safety of the harbour wave breakers to make that day’s living? The moss tells us that that time has passed. People don’t walk here on a daily basis anymore, or the moss would be worn off. Now the pontoon is neglected, as is the rope. They bear witness to a bygone era. Perhaps this is what captures us?

Print: Weather Front

When the sun is setting up and there is a cloud front moving overhead, you feel lucky to be alive to witness it. I had to balance experiencing this moment with capturing it with my camera, because I felt the rarity of the occasion. It makes it worth capturing, but not at the expense of the actual experience - something I try to remind myself in my photography. Images are all well and good, but experiences are what makes up a life time. Perhaps that’s a poor sales strategy to put in the description, but hopefully I managed to convey some of the emotions of the moment with this image. I received an Honourable Mention award for it in the 2023 edition of the Swedish Photography Championship.

Print: Spotlight

I was standing on my boat considering how to best capture the exploding colours of the sunset that were painting the sky before my eyes, when I turned around to reach for my camera and saw how a small section of trees on the island I was anchored next to were literally looking on fire. Knowing how quickly those things change, I was quick to not miss the opportunity. The light was somehow concentrated on this little group of trees and the cliff in front of them, while the surrounding foliage was dark green. Sometimes nature just does all the work for you.

Print: Cluster of Trees

This image, alongside the image “Stockholm City Hall ICM” made me a finalist in the Landscape category of the 2023 edition of the Swedish Photography Championship. While my friends were busy skiing, I traversed the top of a mountain in the thickest fog I had ever experienced, which created a dream-like landscape. This cluster of trees were a prominent feature in the otherwise barren, snow-covered landscape, and the fog removed any distractions, even removing the border between land and air.

Limited edition inkjet print, 25 maximum. Once 25 prints have been made (in addition to two Artist’s Proofs), this image will never be printed again.

Print: Stockholm City Hall ICM

This image, alongside my image “Cluster of Trees”, made me a finalist in the Fine Art category of the 2023 edition of the Swedish Photography Championship. Possibly the most depicted scene in Stockholm, but with a different take - using ICM to create a painterly effect. I had experimented with the technique at this location a few days prior, and when driving past I spotted the setting sun and saw an opportunity for an amazing result. The sunset did not disappoint.

Print: Landsort in Fog

An image of the iconic lighthouse Landsort, which represents the southern gateway to the Stockholm archipelago, as seen from the sea. I captured this image on my way south with my sail boat, on a foggy morning with just enough wind to bring me forward in a quiet, eerie, almost sneaky way. The subtle colours in the sky really come to their own when printing this image, really conveying the mood and minimalism of the morning.

Print: Sunset Lake

There is a segment of beach near where I grew up. One evening I happened to stop by there to spend the night camping, and I had my camera with me as the sunset really turned into something special. Sunsets can be magnificent and epic, but this one was subdued, almost quiet. There was a slight veil of cloud cover that diffused the light just the right amount. I experimented with the low contrast light and the pastel colours, having in mind an image that would feel serene. Because that’s how it felt being there.

Print: Symmetry

This is an image of the pier in Åhus, Sweden, on a rare occasion where no people were out to enjoy it. It took some painstaking attention to detail to achieve the symmetry iof the image, so I felt it was worth naming it accordingly. It is captured on film, HP5+, on a medium format 6×17 camera.

About the Prints

All prints are original prints, signed by me. Some of the pints are sold in Limited Editions. This means that when the number of pieces in the edition have been printed and sold, the image will never be produced again under any circumstances. My Limited Editions come in various sizes, and each size has an individual edition run; for example an image can be produced as a 13×18cm in 25 pieces, 28×28cm in 15 pieces, and 28×38 in 10 pieces. Details on stock and sizes are outlined for the respective image. In addition, there will be two Artist’s Proofs made for my personal archives.

The prints are all archival pigment prints - also known as giclée prints. For specifics on which paper and ink, check each item. The size refers to the printed image size without a white border, which all prints include (your framer will need the white border to make his/her life easier!). While pigment prints like these are extremely durable in terms of colour retention and resistance to paper yellowing - the print when properly stored will last generations - they are also sensitive to scratching. Therefore they must be framed behind a protective barrier, such as glass or acrylic. My preferred method is anti-reflexive glass to ensure the image is not obscured by light reflections (though this increases the cost by a noticeable amount).
